Heron Lake, population 698, is located along Minnesota Highway 60 in southwest Minnesota. We are 12 miles southwest of Windom MN, and 26 miles from the City of Jackson which is our county seat. The community of Heron Lake has strong ties to local agricultural and holds itself to those hard working values. The City of Heron Lake offers amenities & services including the local police department, fire department, ambulance service, library, elementary school with pool, municipal liquor store, well kept city park, post office, bank, and a community center with large banquet-reception hall. Looking for a job? Heron Lake major employers include New Vision Coop Elevator, Heron Lake Bio-Energy, and Fest Trucking. Feeling hungry, we have two gas stations that serve hot food and pizza, and a more formal restaurant The Plaza Grill. We are a great small town to live in.
The Police Department: The Village of Heron Lake Marshal’s Office was established by ordinance 109 back on April 26th 1887, but was in service prior to that date. This department has remained proudly open for public service for over 125 years!  The position of City Marshal/Police Chief has been held by a number of interesting characters over the years.
Presently the Department is staffed with a full time Chief of Police and slots open for several appointed part time patrol officers. The department provides 24 hour on call availability, daily patrol services, and provides assistance to neighboring law enforcement agencies under mutual aid. In 2013 the department assumed the duties of emergency management for the city. In 2013 the department started this website, The Community Newsletter, as a clearing house for local information and events.
